Want to live a meaningful and exciting life? I’m sure you do. Here’s an activity that you will really value and should help you focus on what you want to achieve in life. If you are married, do this individually first then compare your list with your spouse and see which items you can combine and pursue as a couple or family.
Go to a nice, quiet place where you can daydream and talk to yourself. Bring a pen and paper. Once you’re settled and relaxed dream about the future. What do you want to be and what do you want to accomplish in your lifetime? List the things that your heart desires; things that mean a lot to you. It can be anything and it doesn’t have to be financial in nature. But it should be something that is not easy to accomplish and may take years or a lifetime to complete. Here are some of the usual goals:
- build my dream house
- buy my own car
- own a farm
- raise a family
- exercise regularly
- travel abroad
- learn to play the piano, saxophone or violin
- earn a master’s or doctor’s degree
- establish a multi-million business
- retire with P10M
… and some that are not so common:
- put-up a foundation
- write & publish a book
- climb to the top of Mt. Apo or Mt. Everest
- master a martial art
- run the marathon
- visit all provinces of the Philippines
- run for Congressman, Senator, VP or President
- walk or run across the Philippines
- set foot on Earth’s 7 continents
- participate in a triathlon
- snow ski
- sky dive & scuba dive
- pilot a plane
- act in a movie
- qualify in Pinoy Idol, Survivor or Pinoy Big Brother
- live to 100 years old
You get the idea. You don’t have to complete the list in one sitting because your dreams and aspirations change over time. (It’s been 10 years and I haven’t completed my list yet; I’m still at number 21). Make sure you include time limits in your list and make it as detailed as possible (include amount of money required if applicable). Once or twice a year review and update your list to see how you are doing. You can delete and replace a goal when there’s little chance that you can still accomplish it. Most, if not all, of your activities during your lifetime will revolve around the items in your list. This list is essentially your life and by the time you retire you will be able to look back and say, “yeah, it has been a good life.” (I sure wish you don't get to remark, "pambihira, halos wala akong na-accomplish! ")
