Thoughts on True Wealth

Most people equate true wealth with acquiring a million dollars in their bank account. But what if you suddenly receive a million or 10 million dollars right now, would you be satisfied? Is true wealth based on playing or adding up numbers or is there something more to it, something much more important.

The Christmas time is fast approaching and many would expect remakes or reruns of the old Christmas Carol story starring Ebenizer Scrooge, who was portrayed to be very wealthy but was too cheap to even add heat to his own living quarters. He was living a miserable life until he met the ghosts of Christmas past, the present, and the future. Compare his way of life to that of his clerk that although poor and burdened with several children, was portrayed as happy and satisfied at being a great father.

The story may be fiction but the moral should cut deep into the hearts of many, particularly those who work tirelessly day and night just to acquire more and more wealth. For them true wealth means money in plain and simple terms, and the more they have it the better they think they would be.

People vary in the way they view what true wealth is. Some would say true wealth is having the peace of mind that comes from being free from debt, while others are content with being healthy and to be with their family. Others would say that true wealth for them is the ability to live life the way they want it to be, whatever the cost such life would lead to themselves and to the people around them. Answers to this question can be as many as the people that inhabit this world.

True wealth is defined by what people perceive it to be.

True wealth should not be limited to the financial aspects, as this would not be true for the heroes of society: doctors, policemen, firemen, soldiers - who risk life and limb to help people they don't even know instead of working like the people in Wall Street who are out to make big bucks. If money is everything in this world, there would not have been volunteers and kind souls who choose to travel across the globe, helping people in a distant and hostile country instead of staying in the comforts of their home, watching TV and eating their favorite meal.

Focusing on financial matters is not a bad thing, but people should realize that true wealth does not only involve money, as it does involve something much, much more valuable.
